Serving the Sunshine Coast from Noosa - Kawana Waters

Our Vet - Dr Sandra BVSc

Dr Sandra has been a veterinarian for nearly 30 years.

She graduated from the University of Sydney and has worked in private, corporate and animal welfare clinics all over the world. She is a highly experienced vet with a membership in Small Animal Medicine. She continues to work part time in general practice.

Now that she has settled on the Sunshine Coast, she founded  Coastal Veterinary Services which is a small business entirely devoted to in-home euthanasia of pets.

She has loved and lost several of her own pets over the years and is deeply committed to ensuring that pets have a peaceful and dignified end of life experience. She understands how stressful, confusing and painful this time is for owners and deeply believes that saying goodbye in the home environment is the best for the animal and it’s owners.

She is committed to alleviating the pain and suffering of old and terminally ill pets, when the time has come.

Caring for you and your pet

At the centre of our service is a genuine desire to alleviate your pet’s pain and suffering. However we also want to help you, the owner. This starts as soon as you contact us for the first time. We would like owners to be as well informed as possible, to ask all the questions they may have and to be emotionally prepared for the day.

We understand that making the decision to euthanise a much loved pet is very difficult and confusing. Some clients say it is the most difficult decision they have ever had to make others call it surreal.

Dr Sandra wants to help you make the right decision as much as she can. She will get in touch with you personally to have an initial chat about your pet. Sometimes it just takes one phone call other times clients may wish to talk to Sandra a few times to ensure the time is right. We don’t rush you and understand.

When you are ready, we will send you a form to fill in and will arrange an appointment with you. We can also connect you to a crematorium should this be something you are interested in.

Our fees are $388 for a weekday appointment + $88 for weekends. Please note this fee only covers the euthanasia and will need to be paid on the day prior to the appointment. We will provide you with bank details for a bank transfer.

Cremation/ disposal are not included and will need to be arranged by you with your chosen provider. We are happy suggest a local crematorium.

On the day

Dr Sandra and a vet nurse will arrive at your home. They will be dressed in non clinical clothes and will just bring a small box of items that have already been prepared prior to the appointment.

You will guide them to your chosen part of the house or garden. We are open to all scenarios. Some clients have many family members present. Some light candles and play music. Some would like their other pets to be present. Some would prefer to get through this as quickly as possible. We understand and please feel free to discuss your preferences with us.

If you would like to have a few high quality photos taken of your pet then this will take place first. This is a complimentary additional service Dr Sandra offers as she is also a photographer and she appreciates that these photos make precious keepsakes.

We will then ask you to sign a euthanasia consent form.

When everyone is ready and all your questions have been answered your pet will receive a strong sedative via a small injection under the skin. Within 5-10 minuted your pet will be very relaxed and peaceful. Then the nurse and Dr Sandra  will place a catheter in your pet’s leg vein. The final injection can  be given while the animal is in your arms or while you are holding it’s paw, if that is what you wish to do. It will take less than a minute for your pet to pass away. Dr Sandra will confirm this by listening to the chest with a stethoscope and testing an eye reflex.

They will then give you time to be alone with your pet as this time can be very emotional.

When you are ready, they will remove the catheter in the leg and say goodbye. They are also happy to take your pet with them if you would prefer your chosen crematorium to pick up from us.  Please let us know in advance.

The whole appointment usually takes 30-60 minutes. We understand that sometimes clients need more time on the day and hence we keep a bit of extra time between appointments to be able to give you that time if we can.

This day

“You will be sad, I understand.
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
I know in time that you will see
The kindess that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.”
